How to Sharpen a Serrated Bread Knife

Stop Using Your Bread Knife for Everything (Seriously)

The serrated bread knife was made for one thing: bread. But in many kitchens, it becomes the go-to backup once the main knives are too dull to slice a tomato, let alone a crusty baguette.

Let’s say it again: Serrated bread knives are for bread.

Can Serrated Knives Get Dull? Yes! Here’s What to Do

Many people assume serrated knives don’t need sharpening. The truth? They dull over time, especially with frequent misuse.

Sharpening them might seem intimidating, but it’s doable with the right tools and a little patience.

How to Sharpen a Serrated Bread Knife

To keep your serrated knife in tip-top shape, follow these steps:

  • Use a round hone (ceramic or steel).

  • Sharpen each serration individually by gently passing the hone through the scallops.

  • Feel for a burr forming on the flat side of the blade.

  • Swipe the flat side a couple of times with the hone to strip the burr.

  • You’ll end up with a knife that’s sharp, clean, and ready to slice without tearing.

What If Your Serrated Knife Is Really Worn Out?

If the serration tips are bent or the edge is damaged:

  • You can still restore it by working backward.

  • Focus on reshaping the points of the serrations until they return to a uniform, sharp profile.
