How To Sharpen Using The Pocket Knife Sharpener- Including Tips & Tricks!

·1 min read·Jason Everingham

Weighing in at a mere 2.4 ounces, the Pocket Knife Sharpener stands out as one of our lightest sharpeners, making it an excellent choice for on-the-go use in the field or on the trail.

Equipped with two abrasive options, a 320 grit diamond plate for efficiently raising a burr and a fine ceramic honing rod for those finishing touches, the Pocket Knife Sharpener boasts angle guides set at 25 degrees, ensuring user-friendly and straightforward operation.

To sharpen with the Pocket Knife Sharpener, begin with the diamond plate. Place the knife's side flat against the guide closest to you, ensuring the cutting edge is on the abrasive. Push the knife edge away and along the abrasive surface, repeating this stroke on the same side 5-10 times until a burr is formed. Once the burr is raised, repeat the same number of strokes on the opposite side using the opposing guide and pulling the knife across the abrasive.

For honing, utilize the ceramic rod. Employing the same outlined motions for honing, alternate strokes by pushing and pulling the knife across the ceramic. Continue alternating strokes, 5 per side, or until you achieve the desired level of sharpness.

Additional tips and tricks:

  • The Pocket Knife Sharpener excels at honing curved blades like recurves, as the round ceramic easily follows the arch, making it effective for challenging-to-reach areas.
  • For knives with larger serrations, the ceramic hone can also be used to sharpen and restore the edge.
  • The diamond plate is versatile and works effectively on smaller trail shovels and hatchets. Use it similarly to a file to restore an edge or repair minor damage.
